“It was presented by me, bellowing about what a horrible year it had been and ever year I seem to be saying, ‘This has been the worst year ever’ and along comes 2020 and puts all of that into sharp relief.
“It’s been an interesting year to approach and the approach of this particular special is very different to the kind of stuff I’ve done in the past.”
He added: “It’s more sort of character-based. It is effectively it’s like a mock documentary about the year because that felt like a very apt format for a show to go on Netflix.
“After all, Netflix is high-end dramas and it has had great success with doing a lot of documentaries often about appalling things happening, with beautiful cinematography.”
He continued: “It seemed like a good opportunity to do something that was talking about the year but was also gently tweaking the nose of a format you would see on Netflix and also we could showcase a lot of brilliant performances.”
