Yellowstone theories: John Dutton’s demise ‘sealed’ in season 3 clue | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

John Dutton and his children Beth and Kayce were all targeted by horrific attacks at the end of the latest season of Yellowstone. Their lives hanging in the balance during the wait for season four, one perceptive viewer of Paramount’s Western drama realised John himself may have confirmed his death near the start of the latest instalment.

An early scene from the third season of Yellowstone may have foreshadowed the death of John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) in next year’s premiere.

Yellowstone’s powerful owner was struck down in the gripping final minutes of the season finale when he was shot by unknown gunmen after helping some motorists on the side of the road.

Although his conveniently placed cell phone stopped what would have been a fatal shot to the heart, there’s still a chance John could succumb to his wounds in the first few episodes of the next outing on Paramount.

The ominous clue came from the mouth of John Dutton himself during a touching moment with his grandson, Tate (Brecken Merrill) in the first episode of season three.

A particularly observant fan of the series picked up on the ranch owner’s premonition and took to Reddit to speculate what it could mean for the start of the next episode.

Redditor DonSoIo posted: “I noticed this today when I was watching an early season 3 episode when John is talking to Tate about dreams at the camp.

“After John tells Tate that he can make his dreams whatever he wants them to be.”

Picking up right where the second season left off, Tate is still recovering from being kidnapped by the malicious Beth brothers, Teal (Terry Serpico) and Malcolm (Neal McDonough).

Screenwriter Taylor Sheridan is already known for his Hollywood scripts, and takes care to construct each episode of Yellowstone with poignant character moments and satisfying thematic pay-offs.

This insightful viewer quickly picked up on the fact that John recounts his last moments of season three beat-by-beat ten whole episodes before it actually happened.

They added: “Is John having a premonition of what happens to him at the end of season 3? Is it possible that this could be a hint at his demise in season 4?”

While the series hasn’t delved into supernatural territory thus far, it could be possible John’s dreams have provided a vision of the end of his life.

Another fan speculated: “He also said something along the lines of he’ll only have a phone on him when he has no service – he had a phone on him with no service and it saved his life.”

As John’s dialogue takes care not to actually mention his death, there’s still a chance he’ll come out of the brutal ordeal with just a few scars.

Moreover, Kevin Costner’s co-star Luke Grimes seemed to confirm John Dutton will be sticking around for season four, at least for the first few episodes.

Yellowstone will return with season 4 in 2021 on Paramount and Peacock.
